L-phenylalanine is an amino acid which is essential for the proper functioning of the human body. It has several functions. One is that it is a precursor of tyrosine – another amino acid, and the other is that it acts as an agent allowing the synthesis of dopamine and norepinephrine – the two neurotransmitters crucial for the proper mind and body alertness. Thus, L-phenylalanine can elevate the mood, boost the memory and learning skills and also relieve pain. It is used to treat depression, arthritis, PMS symptoms, migraines, Parkinson’s disease and a variety of other health conditions.
Some natural sources of L-phenylalanine are: nuts, cottage cheese, lima beans, red meat, fish, milk, yogurt, eggs, poultry, pumpkin and sesame seeds.
L-phenylalanine is the amino acid essential for the production of phenylethylamine, the neurotransmitter which plays the greatest role for the libido and the romantic feelings a person has. This means that it is especially useful for men who are suffering from a low libido and lack of interest in sex, for some reason or another.
In fact, phenylethylamine, or PEA is also known as the “love molecule” and is an excellent natural cure for depression as well. It causes that feeling of “high” when a person is in love, when he or she is exercising, and it also helps with concentration and alertness as well.
One must be cautioned that L-phenylalanine should not be taken by people suffering from anxiety attacks, pregnant women, people with hypertension and those with phenylketonuria as well as people diagnosed with certain forms of skin cancer.
